Chinatown Newcomer Elementary Student Tutorial (NEST)
Supporting Young People in their New Home

NEST After School Program and Summer Programs provide bilingual education and multi-cultural enrichment to Asian newcomers ages 6 to 11. NEST services include homework assistance, tutoring, language enrichment, interactive computer classes in the Computer Learning Center, arts and crafts, healthy lifestyles, and intergenerational activities.

Life Inc. Career Exploration Program in Marin County
Creating Opportunities in the Lives of Youth

The Life Inc. Career Exploration Program prepares youth for the future by empowering them with knowledge to made informed decisions and goals.  The program focuses on self-discovery, assessment of individual likes and dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, career visioning, career readiness, mentoring and college preparation. The program is taught at four schools and the Marin Youth Center. Resources for the Life Inc. program have been generously funded by the Deloitte Foundation.

FiftyPlus Employment Support Program
Supporting Job Seekers over 50

Job seekers over 50 face special challenges as they search for employment or re-enter the job market. The YWCA FiftyPlus Employment Program assists Marin County women over 50 years old to find permanent employment. Services include assessments, resume writing help, and interviewing practice. Job-seekers develop a realistic, action-based job search plan, including strategies to help overcome age discrimination. The FiftyPlus Program is located at 900 Mission Street in San Rafael and provides employment counseling, career services, technology training, workshops and seminars.

Housing at the YWCA Apartments
Providing Dignity and Respect to Older and Disabled Adults

The YWCA Apartments provide affordable housing to approximately 120 adults over age 65 and persons with disabilities. The YWCA Apartments offers multi-cultural enrichment programs for tenants, intergenerational activities, and a computer lab. Counseling and support are also available in Mandarin, Cantonese, and Russian. The YWCA Apartments is a Section 8 project subsidized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Designed by the architect Julia Morgan in 1932, the site is a San Francisco Historical Landmark and a National Monument of Nob Hill. Facility rental is available for nonprofit organizations.

ESL Classes- English as a Second Language
Teaching English Language Skills and Multicultural Exchange

The YWCA offers 10-week adult English as a second language programs ongoing throughout 2011. Classes meet Monday through Wednesday from 1:30 pm- 4pm. Classes are open to all levels, but focus on beginning to intermediate pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading writing, and conversation. The classes emphasize life skills, job readiness skills, and American culture. The instructor is a native from the United States, and bilingual in English and Mandarin.

The YWCA also hosts an “English Salon” at the end of each 10 week program. The salon is an evening party where ESL students from the community can mingle with English speakers, play games, learn about American culture, make friends, and practice English skills. All ages are welcome to attend this event.

All classes are held at the YWCA Apartments, 940 Powell St., San Francisco.

Intergenerational Programs

Computer Learning Center
Bridging the Digital Divide

The YWCA offers free open lab time and computer classes in the computer lab on the first floor of the YWCA Apartments. The lab houses 12 HP and Dell computers, a scanner, an HP color printer, DVD and television.

The lab is open to the public Mon-Fri from 9:30-12:00. Tuesday from 9-10:30 Cantonese and Mandarin Karaoke is offered. Thursday from 9:30-12:00 bilingual computer instruction is available.

The YWCA offers a bilingual basic computer skills class every Thursday from 10am-12:30pm in the YWCA Apartments computer lab. Students learn the basics for operating English based PCs supporting Microsoft Windows. Students learn how to navigate the desktop, open and use an email account, type Chinese, use Microsoft Word to write cover letters and resumes, and go online in order to look for work opportunities, search for resources, access Chinese websites, and English learning websites. Classes are first come first served with a capacity of 10 students per class. Sessions are 4 weeks long.

The YWCA Afterschool program uses the computer lab for educational purposes as well.
